I began writing this one but I didn't like the feel of it so I stopped and discarded it. Untold Tales of the Zero Street Mission Part 2.1 - In The Shadow Of Chaos "Jay," a quiet female voice greeted in the darkness of Hatman's room at the Lair Mansion. His heart skipped a beat and he gasped...he wasn't usually so jumpy, but after the attack against him in the alley his primal reflexes seemed to rush to the foreground at every opportunity. He disliked that. But he also recognized the voice, which caused him to calm down almost as quickly as he wound up. "Keiko?" he asked, just to make sure. "Yes." She approached slowly and stood above him as he lay on his couch, still groggy from dozing off. He may have been healed by Uhuna in the hospital but he still had little energy left. And as Keiko immediately picked up..."You look tense." Jay sighed. "I...had a difficult day," he summarized quickly. "So I've heard." Keiko put down the duffel bag she brought with her and squeezed onto the couch next to him just as he sat up to rub his eyes. "You'll continue to feel tired as long as your heart is weighted by the anger and fear you still feel." "Anger and fear?" Jay shook his head and gave a slight smile...but he didn't contradict her. "You don't have the same luxury I do," she continued. "You don't kill. When you are beaten you don't have an immediate outlet for your feelings." "You're suggesting I kill someone to feel better?" Jay asked. He shook his head. "You know I can't do that." "I'm suggesting--" she paused for a moment, seeming to have to think up just the right wording. "--a little therapy." Keiko stood and picked up a baseball bat Jay had leaning in a corner of the room. She noticed him flinching as soon as she raised it. "Don't worry, I couldn't harm you." "It's not that, it's just--" he shook his head. "Never mind." She quickly handed the baseball bat to him, handle first. "Take this," she said. Once he did, she pulled a folded blindfold out of the bag she brought with her and put it on. She walked into the center of the room and said, "Swing at me." "What...?" Jay sounded horrified and confused. "No, I'm not allowing you to use me to soothe your troubled emotions." She raised a corner of the blindfold and gave him an amused look. She then replaced the blindfold and added, "I thought a little demonstration might cheer you up." Jay swallowed hard, took a deep breath, and moved closer to Keiko. He took a half-hearted swing...but before the bat contacted her body she kicked at the handle, knocking the bat clear out of his hands and sent it tumbling to the floor. Keiko then removed the blindfold and smiled. "Anything which can apply force has a weak point," she told him. "Those criminals merely found yours. I found the bat's weak point and took it from your grip." "I'm not sure how this is supposed to make me feel better," Jay admitted as he slumped back onto the couch. She smiled. "Because it is our turn to find your assailant's weak spot." Keiko sat back down next to him. "I appreciate the offer to help me take them on, but--" "No," Keiko shook her head and laughed. "I'm not here to fight your battles for you...especially since you would not approve of my methods. I am visiting to provoke you to come up with a plan." She shrugged. "And perhaps to help you relax a little. When I entered the mansion Yo told me you were more skittish than her little bunnies. From what I've seen so far I tend to agree." -- Story written and copyrighted (C) 2005 by Jason Froikin, and may not be -- reprinted without permission. -- Keiko Takashi (C) 2005 by Jason Froikin, all rights reserved -- All other characters property of their respective owners |
